1. Structural features of Form 2: dependency chain formation
Form 2 is the year in which most students "start to be unable to keep up" among the 3 years of junior secondary. The superficial reason is that the course becomes deeper, but the real structural reason is something else:The dependence between topics suddenly increases.
General topics for Form 1 juxtapose— Negative numbers, linear equations of one variable, percentages, and area and volume are relatively independent. If you are not proficient in Form 1, it will not directly bring down the other.
Form 2 begins to form dependency chain: If you are not proficient in factoring, you will definitely not be able to do algebraic fractions; the definition of trigonometric ratios is unclear, and all trigonometry will be affected in the future. This means that a gap spreads along the chain, and students often only see symptoms at the end of the chain.
Why is this important?
It changes the approach. 2. Scope of Form 2 courses
Classified according to three learning areas. The order and depth of topics vary greatly from school to school. The following is a common arrangement.

Differences between schools are worth noting. Some Band 1 secondary schools have learned to introduce basic concepts of coordinate geometry (distance formula, midpoint formula, slope) in Form 2, or deeper applications of percentages such as compound interest; some schools have postponed these to Form 3. Therefore, our Form 2 courses are adjusted according to the actual progress of the student's school - please provide the school name when registering so that we can align the school's arrangement.
3. Five core points lost
According to our teaching observations, Form 2 lost points in the following five areas. Each item is accompanied by its position in the dependency chain - because that determines the priority of processing.
Missing digit one: factoring
Dependency chain positionThe starting point of the chain, priority processing. Algebraic fractions, quadratic equations, and senior secondary quadratic functions and continued polynomials all rely on it.
Typical errorsCan't tell which method to use - when seeing a quadratic, it just tries cross multiplication, ignoring square differences or perfect squares.
Forget to extract the common factors first, e.g. 2x² + 8x + 6 Multiply cross directly instead of bringing up 2 first.
Incomplete decomposition, such as stopping at (x² − 4)(x + 1) without further decomposing into (x + 2)(x − 2)(x + 1).
Wrong combination of symbols for cross multiplication.
- Establish a judgment sequence: First check if there are common factors → then check if the square difference or perfect square → finally try cross multiplication. Fixed order eliminates the entire category of "unrecognized method" errors.
- Expand verification: After decomposition, multiply the factors back to check. This step only takes 10 seconds, but it can intercept most symbol errors.
- Check whether it is thorough: Ask once for each factor "Can this be decomposed again?"
Lost Point 2: Introduction to Trigonometric Ratios
Dependency chain positionThe starting point of another chain. Afterwards, Form 3’s advanced trigonometry and senior secondary’s continued trigonometry (sine formula, cosine formula, three-dimensional problems) all started from this point.
Typical errorsIt is difficult to distinguish between the opposite side, adjacent side and hypotenuse, resulting in wrong trigonometric ratio selection.

List the equations directly without first drawing a diagram and labeling the known conditions.
I am not familiar with the values of trigonometric ratios of commonly used angles and cannot quickly check whether the computer results are reasonable.

Missing Fraction Three: Algebraic Fractions
Dependency chain positionDown the Chain - Symptoms often appear here, but the source is often in factorization.
Typical errorsWhen reducing, remove "terms" instead of "factors" - this is a conceptual error, such as (x + 3)/3 Of 3 about out.
When adding or subtracting, if you make a mistake in the denominator or forget to multiply the numerator, you must multiply accordingly.
Ignore the restriction that the denominator cannot be zero.
An attempt is made to reduce the numerator and denominator without first factoring them.
- Fixed process: Complete factorization of the numerator and denominator → then remove the common factors → finally check the constraints on the denominator.
- If errors continue, go back to factoring— This is the most common misdiagnosis: students think they do not understand algebraic fractions, but in fact they cannot do the decomposition step.
Missing Point Four: Advanced Applications of Percentages
Dependency chain positionRelatively independent, but continuing directly into DSE - Percentages and error estimation are common topics in Paper 1 Part A(1).
Typical errorsThe relationship between the original price and the current price is reversed: price after discount = original price × (1 − discount rate), but when calculating the original price,remove rather than multiply.
Successive percentage changes add up directly, for example an increase of 10% and then a decrease of 10% can be mistaken for a return to the original value.
The base of profit and loss percentage is wrong - whether it is based on cost price or selling price.
There is confusion about how simple interest and compound interest are calculated.
- Write down the base clearly first: "Based on the original price as 100%" or "Based on the cost price as 100%", this sentence can eliminate most base errors.
- Continuous changes using multiplication: First rise 10% and then fall 10%, it should be
1.1 × 0.9 = 0.99, that is, a net decrease of 1%, not a return to the original value. - Solve the equation first in reverse problem: When finding the original price, let the original price be x, and then establish the equation according to the question. Do not try to do mental arithmetic.
Missing quintile five: reasons for the geometric proof
Dependency chain positionWriting habits are a problem, but the influence continues to DSE - Paper 1 is scored according to the reasoning steps, and most of the points for the proof questions are on "reasons".
Typical errorsOnly write the conclusion without writing the reasons. For example, write "∠ABC = ∠DEF" without indicating which property it is based on.
The reason is written vaguely, for example, "the angles are equal" instead of a specific property name.
The order of reasoning is confused, or intermediate steps are skipped.
Without first labeling the known equilateral sides and angles on the diagram.
- Use the format of "statement + reasons in brackets", each step is an independent line, and use
∵/∴Mark logical relationships. - Mark first, write later: Label all known equal sides, equal angles and right angles on the diagram - the labeling itself is the idea.
- Organize reason comparison table: List the complete names of commonly used properties according to the standard writing method in your own textbook, and always use the same writing method during practice.

4. Dependency comparison: which topic affects what
The purpose of this table is reverse diagnosis: When a certain topic continues to make errors, look to the left to see its preconditions to find the real breakpoint.

How to use: Suppose your Form 2 student keeps making mistakes on "Equations with Fractions". Test each item one by one and find the first unstable link. That is where you should invest your time.
5. Coping with on-campus examinations
The depth of in-school examinations in Band 1 secondary schools is often higher than the curriculum requirements, while Form 2 examination papers usually mix multiple topics - this is a direct consequence of the dependency chain.
Correct order for exam preparation
- Sort by dependency chain first, not by textbook directory. Prioritize ensuring that the starting points of the chain (factorizations, trigonometric ratios) are solid, as they support multiple downstream topics at the same time.
- Organize formulas and reasons cheat sheet: One page covers multiplication formulas, factoring methods, definitions of trigonometric ratios, properties of quadrilaterals, interior and exterior angles of polygons and formulas.
- Redo the wrong question: It is more effective to redo questions that you have done wrong than to do new ones - because the new questions may just be a repetition of the type you have already done.
- Practice the school’s past exam questions (If available): The question-writing styles of each school are obviously different, and this step is the most targeted.
Key points for answering questions in on-campus exams
- Write down the steps: Don’t skip steps in multi-step algebraic operations - middle schools began to give points according to steps, and DSE Paper 1 was given points entirely according to reasoning steps.
- Reasons must be written to prove: Indicate the name of the basis of the property in parentheses.
- Calculation after factorization: Multiply back and check, and symbol errors can be intercepted in 10 seconds.

Which schools do students come from?
Our students mainly come from Band 1 secondary schools in Kowloon district, including Diocesan Boys' School (DBS), Diocesan Girls' School (DGS), La Salle College, Maryknoll Convent School (MCS), Wah Yan College, Kowloon, Heep Yunn School and CKY, etc. Because students are concentrated in a small number of schools, we are able to accumulate information on school-based test questions from each school and make targeted preparations before the school test.

It’s not about preparing for DSE, it’s about avoiding creating gaps.
