Public examination results
In 2017 and 2018 Self-taught student I took the HKDSE Mathematics exam and obtained the highest grades in all three subjects:
| suject | score | The examination format of this subject |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics Core (Compulsory Part) | 5** | Two papers: Paper 1, traditional questions, 2 hours and 15 minutes (65%), Paper 2, 45 multiple-choice questions, 1 hour and 15 minutes (35%) |
| Mathematics Extended Modules Unit 1 M1 (Calculus and Statistics) | 5** | One test paper, 2 hours and 30 minutes, full marks 100 |
| Mathematics Extended Modules Unit 2 M2 (Algebra and Calculus) | 5** | One test paper, 2 hours and 30 minutes, full marks 100 |
Coping with three subjects at the same time as a self-taught student means having to plan three test papers with completely different structures on your own without school progress, no on-campus mock tests, and no teachers to urge you to do homework. This experience directly shaped our teaching design: treat "self-diagnosis of weaknesses" and "self-management of review progress" as skills that need to be taught explicitly, rather than assuming that students will naturally do it.
Teaching experience
- Long-term teaching tuition Mathematics, accumulated a large number of student cases, spanning local courses and international courses.
- Familiar with the difference Band 1 School There are differences in examination patterns, question-taking styles and scoring criteria.
- Students come from prestigious schools and international schools in Kowloon such as DBS (Diocesan Boys' School), DGS (Diocesan Girls' School), La Salle College, Heep Yunn School, Maryknoll Convent School (MCS), and Wah Yan College, Kowloon.
- Many students have achieved Level 5 or above in DSE Mathematics and have progressed to the top three local or overseas universities. For examples, see Results.
- He has provided maths tuition for college undergraduates and is familiar with the gap between secondary school mathematics and first-year college calculus and linear algebra.
Teaching philosophy
"Many students find mathematics difficult because they have never really understood it. My teaching emphasizes 'understanding' before 'practice'. When students understand the principles behind it, they will naturally be able to solve problems with ease."
— Terry Wan, founder of Math Insight
The specific way this sentence is implemented in the classroom is that each formula must explain three things: where it is derived, under what conditions it is established, and in what type of questions it will be used. As long as students can answer these three questions, they no longer need to rely on rote memorization, because even if the formula is forgotten temporarily, they can come back to it in the examination room. Related methods can be further read Common missing points and miscalculated numbers in DSE mathematics.
Instructor’s course expertise coverage
"Understanding mathematics" and "knowing about teaching a certain course" are two different things - each course has different scoring mechanisms, allowed tools, and requirements for writing steps. Below are the range of courses our tutors actually master and their key rules.
DSE Mathematics Core
Core's public examination consists of two papers: Paper 1 is a traditional question, which must present all calculation steps, and the test time is 2 hours and 15 minutes, with a full score of 105 points, accounting for 65% of the subject; Paper 2 is a multiple-choice question, with a total of 45 questions, the test time is 1 hour and 15 minutes, accounting for 35%, and no points will be deducted for wrong answers. The course content is organized into three learning areas: "Number and Algebra", "Measurement, Graphics and Space" and "Data Processing". There are also "Advanced Learning Units" for students to comprehensively apply knowledge in each area to solve problems.
This structure determines the focus of teaching: Paper 1 accounts for a high proportion and is scored according to steps, so the step-by-step writing format must be trained; Paper 2 does not have negative points, which means that no question should be left blank, and the selection strategy is more important than trying to answer questions one by one. See detailed disassembly Paper 1 Strategy and Paper 2 Strategy.
DSE Mathematics Extended Modules M1 and M2
Extended Modules can only take one unit of its Form. The examination format for both units is the same: only one test paper, the test time is 2 hours and 30 minutes, the full score is 100 points, and it is divided into short questions in Part A and long questions in Part B. All questions must be answered.
| unit | Main content | Tutor’s teaching focus |
|---|---|---|
| M1 Calculus and Statistics | Application of binomial theorem, exponential and logarithmic functions, basic differential and integral calculus, binomial distribution, Poisson distribution, normal distribution, sampling and statistical inference, hypothesis testing | Situational translation ability: convert text questions into correct distribution and test settings, and interpret the results |
| M2 Algebra and Calculus | Mathematical induction, binomial theorem, trigonometric functions and their derivatives, limits of e, complex numbers, matrices and determinants, systems of linear equations, vectors, advanced differential and integral skills | Rigor of deduction: logical completeness of proof questions and accuracy of algebraic operations |
For choices in subject selection and differences in how university departments handle Extended Modules, see M1 M2 Comparison and subject selection, M1 complete guide and M2 complete guide.
IB Mathematics: AA & AI, HL & SL
The current IB Diploma mathematics is divided into two subjects -Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI), each subject has HL and SL. The recommended teaching hours are 150 hours for SL and 240 hours for HL; the internal assessment Mathematical Exploration (IA) for both subjects and levels accounts for 20% of the final grade. In terms of external assessment, SL has Paper 1 and Paper 2 (1 hour and 30 minutes each), HL has Paper 1 and Paper 2 (2 hours each) plus HL’s exclusive Paper 3 (1 hour, open-ended problem solving).
A distinction that is often overlooked in practice:Computer use is not allowed in Paper 1 of AA, and all AI test papers can use image computers. This means that AA students must additionally train pure hand calculations in Algebra and Calculus operations, while AI students must train proficiency in computer functions and model selection judgment. Tutors will adjust the training direction according to the subjects students take. For details, see IB Mathematics AA Tuition and IB Mathematics AI Tuition.
IGCSE and Edexcel International A Level
IGCSE Mathematics is a tiered exam, and the tier selection will directly seal the upper limit of the score: taking Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1) as an example, the Foundation level can be taken from 5 to 1, and the Higher level can be taken from 9 to 4 (another level 3 is set as the allowed level). The two test papers are 2 hours each and account for 50% each; Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) is divided into Core and Extended Two levels. Therefore, the tutor's first job is often not to teach content, but to assess early on which level students should apply for.
Edexcel International A Level Mathematics is a unit system: the complete IAL consists of six units, Pure Mathematics P1 to P4 are compulsory core, plus two application units, you can choose from Mechanics (M1, M2), Statistics (S1, S2) or Decision Mathematics (D1); the IAS level is P1, P2 plus one application unit. Please note that the old system C1 to C4 have been replaced by P1 to P4, and it is easy to get correct and incorrect areas when reviewing with old materials. See details Edexcel IAL maths tuition and IB/GCE course page.
Junior secondary mathematics and university connection
Junior secondary mathematics (Form 1 to Form 3) is also organized according to three learning areas: "Number and Algebra", "Measurement, Graphics and Space" and "Data Processing", which is the foundation of senior secondary Core. On the other hand, the tutor has also handled first-year college calculus and linear algebra tuition cases, so he knows which secondary school topics will be directly used in college (such as matrices and vectors in M2), and can provide early reinforcement for students who intend to major in science and engineering. See courses for all levels Form 1, Form 2, Form 3 and junior secondary course page.
Teaching assistant team and classroom division of labor
All teaching assistants are students of the University of Hong Kong, with DSE mathematics scores of 5* or above, and receive regular training from lead tutors. Teaching assistants are not "substitutes" but a second pair of eyes in the classroom.

How two tutors divide labor in the classroom
| Classroom stage | Chief Tutor | Teaching assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Concept derivation | Source, establishment conditions and applicable question types of the model formula | Record students' questions and facial expressions, and mark objects that need follow-up. |
| Example questions and demonstrations | Demonstrate complete step-by-step writing format and thinking order | Check whether students' transcriptions are understood correctly, rather than copying mechanically |
| layered exercises | Handle deeper topics and strategic questions | Patrol bit by bit to instantly catch incorrect theorems, skipped steps or calculation errors |
| After class quiz | Design questions and marking criteria | Correct and classify errors, and provide feedback to the lead instructor to adjust the content of the next class |
The key point of this arrangement is that students are discovered the moment they get stuck, instead of not finding out until the homework is returned a week later. This is also Small class maths tuition Compared with the core values of Taipan, it is relatively easy to see One-on-one maths tuition and online maths tuition.
Teaching assistant selection and training
- Grade threshold: DSE Mathematics Core 5* or above. Those taking M1 or M2 must also achieve 5* or above.
- Trial teaching evaluation: You need to demonstrate and explain a designated question to the chief tutor. The focus is not on the correct answer, but on whether the idea can be broken down to the granularity of secondary school students.
- Continuous training: Receive regular training from the chief instructor, unify the steps for writing standards and correction guidelines, and avoid students in the same class receiving conflicting requirements.
- Fixed shift: Teaching assistants focus on fixed classes to ensure a continuous understanding of each student’s error patterns.
Three core strengths of the mentor team
| Advantages | Specific content |
|---|---|
| Candidate perspective | The chief tutor personally took the DSE exam as a self-study student and obtained 5** in Core, M1, and M2. He has first-hand knowledge of the scoring requirements and time pressure, rather than just understanding the exam from the textbook level. |
| Cross-curricular comparison skills | Mastering DSE, IB AA/AI, IGCSE and Edexcel IAL at the same time can point out the differences in scope and the sequence of remedial courses for transfer students (for example, from local courses to IB, or from IGCSE to IAL) |
| School-based test information | Students are concentrated in a small number of Band 1 prestigious schools. They have accumulated test and examination questions from each school and can make targeted preparations before the school exam. |
| Misclassification diagnosis | Divide errors into four categories: concept errors, procedural errors, review errors, and calculation errors. The four categories are dealt with in four different ways, rather than just "do more questions" |
| Continuous training mechanism | Teaching assistants receive regular training from the chief instructor, and unified correction standards and step requirements |
How to tell if a maths tutor is right for you
If you are comparing different Mathematics private supplement Or the tuition centre, it is recommended to use the following three questions to take the actual test during the trial lesson, instead of just looking at the results in the advertisement:
- Can you explain "why"?: Point to a random formula and ask the instructor where it was derived. If he can answer it, it means he understands the structure; if he only answers "just remember it," it means he also relies on memorization.
- Can the error type be diagnosed?: Show your instructor a paper on which you made a mistake, and observe whether he says "You have to be careful" or whether he points out "You made mistakes in all three questions in the same place: you forgot to check the domain after changing the base."
- Can the steps be divided into:Ask him a long question "If my final answer is wrong, how many points will I get?" Only instructors who can give specific answers are truly familiar with the scoring mechanism.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tutors
Will the class be taught by the lead instructor or the teaching assistant?
Two tutors are in the classroom at the same time: the lead tutor is responsible for concept derivation, example demonstration and commentary, and the assistant teacher patrols each position during the practice period and follows up immediately. Students receive systematic instruction and individual support at the same time, which is the actual practice with a teacher-student ratio of no more than 1:7.
What is the tutor's DSE maths result?
The founder, Terry Wan, took the DSE exam as a self-study student in 2017 and 2018, and scored 5** in three subjects: Mathematics Core, M1 (Calculus and Statistics) and M2 (Algebra and Calculus). His academic qualifications are Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Science from the University of Hong Kong.
Will the tutor be replaced midway?
The tutor for regular classes is fixed and will not change in the middle of the school year. Because the teaching materials and exercises are cumulatively arranged according to the weaknesses of the students in the class, substituting them is equivalent to resetting the entire diagnosis record.
Which tutor teaches the one-to-one maths tuition?
Pair by course and level. involving M2, IB Math AA HL, Edexcel IAL Pure Mathematics For more in-depth content, or cases that require university transition, the courses are usually taught directly by the chief instructor. See details One-on-one maths tuition.
Is the tutor familiar with my school’s school-based examinations?
Students mainly come from Band 1 secondary schools in Kowloon such as DBS, DGS, La Salle College, Maryknoll Convent School, Wah Yan College, Kowloon and Heep Yunn School. We have accumulated test and examination question data from each school, and can strengthen practice based on the question-writing style of the school before the internal exam.
Can the tutor teach in English?
Can. Students studying IB, IGCSE or IAL, as well as English secondary school students, need to be familiar with English mathematical terms and English answer formats. We will teach key terms and step writing in English according to students' needs.
Will the tutor help students with school homework?
We will handle homework problems related to the progress of the course, but the focus is on explaining the methods rather than doing them for you. Our goal is to enable students to complete similar questions independently next time. For relevant arrangements, see FAQ page.
