M2 Tuition: DSE Algebra and Calculus

The real difficulty of M2 is not to calculate too much, but to have complete reasoning - induction, matrix and vector setting, and not to skip every step.

1. What is M2: Examination and Course Positioning

The full name of DSE Mathematics Extended Modules Unit 2 (M2) is Algebra and Calculus. It focuses on algebraic structures, rigorous reasoning, and advanced calculus. It is not a simple "more formulas" course.

Part B only has 3 to 5 questions but accounts for 50 points, which means that each question is usually composed of multiple small questions that lead to each other. If you make a mistake in the first question, you will easily lose points later; therefore, the practical focus of M2 is not “doing it fast”, but The settings in the previous section are correct, the derivation is written down, and each key result is calculated in advance..

M2 does not include: Complex numbers, L'Hôpital's rule, arc length, matrix diagonalization, inverse trigonometric functions. They fall under the old system of Additional Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, University level or non-M2 scope. 3. What’s really difficult about M2?

Difficulty 1: Mathematical induction is not a template for filling in the blanks

The logical chain that must be written in full
  1. Explicitly define the proposition P(n).
  2. Verify the basic steps and write "Therefore P(1) is established."
  3. Write the inductive hypothesis "Assume that P(k) holds, that is...".
  4. Derive P(k+1) and clearly indicate where the inductive assumption is used.
  5. End with a full conclusion.
Most common points lost

Skip the inductive hypothesis, do not point out how to extrapolate from k to k+1, and only write calculations but no conclusions. This is not a question of knowledge but of argument format.

Difficulty 2: Setting of vector questions

There is no fixed formula for vector questions. The key is to choose the right base and clearly express the relationship between points and lines. If the setting is good, the proof will be short; if the setting is wrong, everything will be impossible to advance.

Fixed process
  1. First mark the known conditions on the diagram.
  2. Explicitly set the two basis vectors, e.g. a = OA, b = OB.
  3. First represent all required vectors in terms of bases.
  4. Only then began to do scalar products, vector products or proportional operations.

Difficulty 3: The order of matrices and linear equations

  • Forget that matrix multiplication is not commutative: in general AB ≠ BA.
  • There is no checking whether the determinant is zero before inverting the matrix.
  • The system of equations containing parameters only seeks one situation, and no solution or infinite solutions are discussed.
Treatment method

Before each matrix calculation, write down the order of multiplication; for discussion questions, first use the determinant to determine whether there is a unique solution, and then decide on the subsequent method.

Difficulty 4: Complete verification of calculus

Common points lost
  • Find the derivative of a composite function by multiplying it by the derivative of the inner function.
  • Missing writing when derivation of implicit function dy/dx.
  • The definite integral is not replaced with upper and lower bounds after changing yuan.
  • When the axis of rotation of the volume of the rotating body is not the coordinate axis, the radius is set incorrectly.
Treatment method

Fix each question type as a standard process; for example, when changing a definite integral to a variable, write the new upper and lower limits immediately on the same line as the replacement, rather than leaving it until the end.

4. What kind of students is M2 suitable for?

On-campus scores are not a reliable threshold. The depth of examinations in different schools is not comparable. The more effective one is to look at ability characteristics.

  • Are my settings clearly written out?
  • Is there a reason or basis for each step?
  • Did you make any jumps in key positions?

6. Exam-taking skills and time allocation

M2 is 100 minutes and 150 minutes, which is about 1.5 minutes per minute. Part B has a small number of questions but a large weight, so you must allow time for continuous thinking.

  • The first question of Part B a priori: Spend 20 to 30 seconds checking the first part and you may be able to save your scores for the subsequent questions.
  • Proof questions cannot be left blank: You may still get method points by writing down settings, formulas or known conditions.
  • Matrix first look at the order: Write clearly whether it is AB or BA and then start the calculation.
  • Convert definite integral to dollar: When changing yuan, immediately change the upper and lower limits to avoid missing out at the end.
