Parents' Guide to Maths Tuition: Choosing, Evaluating and Working Together

Don't just ask "How many points will be added after tuition?" Start by asking the student what type of error they made, how the course dealt with it, and what metrics are used to track improvement.

Parents’ first task Identify students’ real bottlenecks
effective early indicators Reduce the rate of repeating wrong questions
A must for trial lessons The latest wrong paper
Price comparison method Look at the unit price per hour, not just the monthly fee
Small class configuration 1:7, about 12 to 14 people, two mentors
junior secondary monthly fee HK$1,280 (4 lessons per month)
DSE compulsory monthly fee HK$1,360 (4 lessons per month)
trial lesson The first class is half price, and the first month’s tuition is deducted for daily reading

1. Do children really need maths tuition?

Failure in a single test does not mean that you need to take tuition, and high scores do not mean that there are no problems at all. Judgment should be based on Whether errors persist, whether gaps spread, and whether students have the ability to correct themselves.

Warning signs that require support and situations that may not require tuition
More likely to need supportNo additional tuition is required
The same type of mistakes are repeated in multiple assignments and tests Occasionally make mistakes, but students know how to find out the reasons and try again
Gaps in previous topics begin to affect new topics, such as factoring dragging algebraic fractions Can keep up with the progress in school and can complete and review independently after class
Know the formula but don’t know when to use it, or only recognize the standard question types You can still find an entry point when encountering changing problems
Being unable to complete the test paper for a long time, or making a lot of mistakes when time is tight Can be completed stably within a limited time and leaving time for inspection
Students cannot tell what they don’t understand and why they did something wrong Able to classify errors and propose correction methods
Because the school teaches senior secondary content in advance and cannot keep up with the progress of the school textbook The school has provided sufficient support and students can digest it

The most common wrong decision: Waiting until your grades plummet. Mathematics is a cumulative subject, and a drop in scores is usually the result of gaps accumulating to a certain level, rather than when the problem started. The earlier warning signs are that it takes longer to complete the questions, you need to read the answers again and again, and the same mistakes start to be repeated.

Don’t just use the school’s scores to judge

The difficulty of different schools, different levels, and different test papers cannot be directly compared. A Form 3 score of 75 in one school may represent completely different abilities than a score of 75 in another school; DSE also uses proficiency-referenced score reporting, and there is no official fixed score line.

What is more meaningful is to see whether students can do the following things:

  • Repeat wrong questions without looking at the answers and explain the reasons for each step
  • Point out whether it is a concept, procedure, review question or calculation error
  • Similar mistakes will not be repeated in the next test
  • Complete most of the questions within the time limit without significantly increasing careless points.

2. Find the type of problem first, then choose a course

"Being bad at maths" is not a diagnosis. Effective support must first answer: Which category of students' mistakes did they make, and where is the earliest breaking point.

Four types of missing points and questions parents should ask
typeTypical performanceParents should askHandle it correctly
Wrong concept Using the wrong theorem, unclear application conditions of the formula, and unable to answer why "Can you explain this formula in your own words?" Stop reading papers and go back to the concepts and prerequisite knowledge to re-understand
programme error The method is correct but steps are skipped, the order is confusing, and the proof lacks reasons. "What step did you miss?" Establish a fixed writing template and demonstrate and rewrite it step by step
Wrong review Missing conditions, wrong answers to questions, inconsistent units or formats "What do you need to hand in at the end of the question?" Establish a process for circling questions, marking keywords and answer formats
Wrong calculation Positive and negative signs, rounding, copying wrong numbers, computer input "Can you use the second method to check?" Establishing substitution formulas, estimation and computer operation specifications

The most valuable practice of trial lesson: Bring a copy of the paper that you recently made mistakes with, and ask your instructor to point out the common pattern of mistakes in questions 3 to 5. If the response is just "be careful" and "do more questions", that is not a diagnosis; if it can be pointed out that "these questions all miss the denominator limit" and "the factorization is unstable, so algebraic fractions cannot be done", then it is an executable analysis.

3. How to choose between small class, one-to-one, online and supplementary courses

Division of labor among the four support modes
modelmost suitable situationAdvantageslimit
Small class in the centre Have a certain foundation and need fixed progress, peer comparison and school-based examination support Systematic teaching materials, fixed rhythm, follow-up by two instructors, and relatively controllable costs Some special gaps may not be able to stop backtracking at any time.
One to one The gap spans multiple grades, the school-based schedule is special, the study combination is special, or intensive tuition is required You can stop the retrace at any time and adjust it completely according to your personal rhythm. The unit cost is high and students still need to take the initiative to practice after class.
online courses Long transportation time, fragmented time, and the need for short-term supplementary classes Save transportation and provide greater flexibility in arrangements Students must be self-disciplined and clearly demonstrate the steps for handwriting
Top-up courses The gap spans multiple grades, and the current topic is only a superficial symptom Find the earliest breakpoint along the dependency chain and rebuild from the source Progress may seem slow in the beginning, so you need to accept that you need to look back before moving forward.

Modes can be switched by stage. For example, first make up for the gaps in factoring and algebra one-on-one, and then join Form 2 or Form 3 small classes after stabilization; attend regular small classes on weekdays, and add online classes for a short period before on-campus exams. Parents do not need to select six years at a time.

How to understand the evidence of small class research

Educational research usually defines "group tuition" as a tutor to 2 to 5 students, which is different from our centre's class system of about 12 to 14 people, two tutors, and a teacher-student ratio of no more than 1:7. Therefore, the average performance of related research cannot be directly applied to any private tuition class.

What is really worth learning from in research are three principles:

  • tuition should be tailored to students’ specific needs, not everyone uses the same content.
  • Tutorial content should be linked to what is being studied at school, to avoid forming a second set of unrelated progress.
  • Requires ongoing and consistent lessons and feedback, the effect of a single or scattered make-up lesson is difficult to accumulate.

4. Must-ask questions and must-see lists for trial lesson

The trial lesson is not just about whether the students are happy or not, but it is about testing whether the course can handle specific problems.

Preparation before trial lesson

  • Bring your most recent school test, exam paper or assignment with incorrect questions
  • List 2 to 3 specific issues that trouble you most
  • Provide schools attended and recent teaching scope
  • Explain short-term goals, such as internal examinations, subject selection, DSE, IB IA or IAL units
  • Write down issues such as class adjustments, fees, and after-school support in advance

Ten must-ask questions in trial lesson

  1. How many people are actually in each class? Don’t just accept the adjective “small classes.”
  2. How many instructors are there in a class? Who will follow up bit by bit during the practice period?
  3. Is the main instructor fixed? Will a student's diagnosis record be reset if he/she is substituted midway?
  4. Can the teaching materials be adjusted according to the school's pace?
  5. What to do when students can’t keep up? Are there any fill-in, shift, or one-on-one options?
  6. Are there any homework and quizzes in each class?
  7. After class, I asked how to arrange homework?
  8. What teaching materials and support are included in the tuition fee?
  9. What are the terms for class transfer, leave, make-up classes and refunds?
  10. Can the tutor analyze the wrong papers brought by the students?

After the trial lesson, don’t just ask “Do you like it or not?”

You can ask the following four questions instead:

  • What specific concept did you learn today?
  • The teacher pointed out where you went wrong?
  • Can you now redo that question without looking at the answer?
  • If you encounter a similar problem next time, what step will you take first?

5. How to evaluate the effectiveness of tuition

The score of a single test is affected by the difficulty of the test paper, the school ranking and the status of the day. It cannot independently prove whether the tuition is effective. It is recommended to track the following four items at the same time.

Four quantifiable indicators of tuition effectiveness
indexhow to measureWhat does improvement mean?
Repeat error rate The number of times the same type of error occurs again in subsequent assignments and tests Instead of just memorizing answers, students actually correct their error patterns
"Knowing but doing it wrong" points lost Scores in each paper due to review questions, procedures or calculation errors Calculation checking, writing and question review habits are improving
time limit completion rate Proportion of questions completed within official time limit Become proficient in problem solving process and tool selection
conceptual expression ability Can students explain the formulas and solutions in their own words? From memorizing steps to understanding

What should a parent report include?

  • What topics and pre-existing gaps are addressed in this issue?
  • The most common types of errors students make
  • Completion status of homework, quizzes and redoing of wrong questions
  • Which indicators have improved and which have not improved
  • Specific targets and inspection dates for the next phase

Avoid "guarantee how many points you will add in a few months" promises. Different students have different starting points, error types, school test papers, and levels of investment, so we cannot honestly guarantee the same results. Procedural errors and review errors may be improved quickly; cross-grade conceptual gaps may take longer. A reliable early indicator is that the rate of re-occurrence of wrong questions has decreased, rather than claiming that a certain level will be promoted in three months.

6. Things parents should and should not do at home

Effective and ineffective practices for parent support
It is recommended to doavoid doing
Fixed weekly maths practice and wrong question re-doing period Just suddenly ask for a lot of homework before the exam
Ask "Which category are you wrong in?" Just ask "What's the score this time?"
Ask your children to explain what they learned today in their own words Parents give answers directly or complete the steps on their behalf
Provide specific feedback to instructors on ongoing issues I just told my tutor, "He's not good at maths."
Praise specific behaviors, such as checking calculations and writing down all the reasons Only use talent tags: "You don't have a maths brain" or "You are good at maths"
Keep reasonable rest and sleep time Effort is measured by staying up late and answering questions

Parents don’t need to know how to solve problems to provide effective support

The role of parents is not to teach mathematics, but to help establish the environment and implement the process. Even if you don’t understand the question, you can still ask:

  • Which formula did you use? Under what conditions does it hold?
  • How do you know the answer makes sense?
  • Can you check the calculation using another method?
  • Is this question a concept, procedure, review question, or is it a calculation error?

Effective parent involvement is support, not monitoring. If every check turns into a scolding, students will start hiding mistakes or copying answers, and the error book will lose its diagnostic function. Errors should be viewed as data: they tell us which link to work on next.

7. Charges and Contract Terms

When parents choose tuition services, in addition to comparing course content, they should also confirm the written terms before making payment. Important information should not be relied on just by word of mouth.

The right way to compare fees

Compare unit price per hour, not the total monthly fee:

Looking only at the monthly fee can easily lead to misjudgment (hypothetical example)
mechanismmonthly feeDuration of each classNumber of classes per monthunit price per hour
A (seems cheaper)HK$1,2001 hour4 classesHK$300
B (seems more expensive)HK$1,3601.5 hours4 classesAbout HK$227

Ten terms that should be confirmed before payment

  • Number of classes per month and actual duration of each class
  • What notes, textbooks, Past Paper or Mock Paper are included in the tuition fee?
  • Are there any additional administrative fees, teaching material fees or seat reservation fees?
  • Is the payment cycle monthly, periodical or multi-month in advance?
  • Trial lesson fees and how to deduct them after registration
  • How much advance notice is required for taking leave?
  • Arrangements, deadlines and available classes for make-up classes
  • Notice period for withdrawal
  • Refund method for paid tuition fees
  • What options do parents have if the instructor, location, or face-to-face/online model changes?

Do not rush to pay the "reservation fee" or pay in advance for a long time. Read the payment, make-up, cancellation and refund terms first, and save your WhatsApp, email, receipt and registration information. If important commitments are made only verbally, confirmation in writing should be requested.

9. Band 1 and special considerations for international school students

Band 1 student

Band 1 students may not necessarily need tuition, but there are three common needs:

  • School-based progress is fast: Some schools have already taught senior secondary compulsory content in Form 3 in advance.
  • On-campus examination: The questions may be higher than the basic requirements of the public examination to improve the school's ranking.
  • Aim higher: The difference usually comes from steps, speed and "knowing what to do but making mistakes", rather than not knowing it at all.

What parents should observe is whether students have specific gaps, rather than assuming that tuition is necessary just because "prestigious schools are highly competitive."

IB, IGCSE and IAL students

  • First confirm the examination board and subject code: IGCSE has Cambridge and Edexcel, IAL has different unit combinations, and the materials cannot be mixed.
  • IB chooses AA or AI: AA Paper 1 is not allowed to use computers; all AI test papers can be used in GDC, and the ability requirements are different.
  • IA or unit system timeline: IB IA accounts for 20%, and topics should be selected in advance; IAL adopts a unit system and can be arranged in different exam seasons.
  • Answer in English: In addition to understanding mathematics, you must also be familiar with English terms and complete explanations.

See details IB Math AA, IB Math AI, Edexcel IAL and International Curriculum Overview.

10. Is Math Insight suitable for your child?

Math Insight is more suitable for the following students:

  • Requires fixed pace, each lesson, quizzes and pre-test support within the school.
  • I hope the instructor can see the writing process instead of just correcting the final answer.
  • Errors need to be categorized and recidivism rates continuously tracked.
  • To study junior secondary, DSE, M1, M2, IB, IGCSE or IAL, the teaching materials need to be adjusted according to the school or examination board.
  • It can match the Prince Edward centre class schedule, or you may want to inquire about one-on-one/online arrangements.

Classroom configuration

  • The teacher-student ratio is no more than 1:7, about 12 to 14 people per class.
  • Two instructors teach at the same time: One lecturer and the other patrolled the practice sessions.
  • Three levels of difficulty exercises: Basic concepts, strengthening and deepening, on-campus test questions and public test questions from prestigious schools.
  • After-school support: WhatsApp to ask about homework.
  • trial lesson: The first class is half price, that is, the first month's tuition is deducted for daily classes.

Class location

Room A, 9/F, Landmark City, 761 Nathan Road, Prince Edward, Kowloon. It takes about 2 minutes to walk from Exit C1 of Prince Edward Station; from Mong Kok Station, you can walk north through Exit A1 or B1 for about 5 to 8 minutes. See the complete map and transportation Contact Us.

Recommended preparation before trial lesson

  1. The most recent wrong paper or assignment
  2. The 2 to 3 issues that are currently most troubling
  3. School attended and recent progress
  4. Short-term goals and available class times

Judgment criteria after trial lesson: You should get a concrete answer - what category does the student's main problem fall into, where is the earliest breakpoint, which mode is recommended, and what is the next checkpoint. If you only receive general advice such as "do more questions" and "try harder", the diagnosis has not been completed.

Parents FAQ

How do you know if your child needs tuition?

See whether mistakes are repeated, whether gaps begin to affect new topics, whether they cannot be completed within the time limit, and whether students can tell where they went wrong. Don't just look at the score once.

Small classes, one-on-one, or online classes are better?

There are no absolute answers. If you need a fixed schedule, you can choose small classes, if there is a gap between grades, you can choose one-on-one, if you need long transportation time, or if you need flexibility, you can choose online classes.

How long does it take for tuition to be effective?

Depending on the error type. Procedural and review issues usually improve quickly; cross-grade conceptual gaps take longer. First look at the reoccurrence rate of wrong questions, rather than promising how many points you will add in a few months.

Parents don’t understand maths, how can they help?

No need to teach questions. It has been very helpful to assist with fixing time, redoing incorrect questions, asking children to explain what they have learned, and giving specific feedback to the tutor on persistent questions.

Do Band 1 students definitely need tuition?

uncertain. You should look at the school-based progress, variation questions, writing standards and time management to see if there are any specific gaps, rather than just looking at the school banding.

What should I ask before paying?

Duration of each class, number of classes per month, teaching material fee, trial lesson fee, class adjustment and make-up class, withdrawal notice, refund method and instructor/class mode change arrangements, and important terms are required to be confirmed in writing.
