DSE Mathematics M2 Guide: Algebra, Calculus and Exam Strategy

Check item by item according to the Education Bureau’s curriculum explanation. There are five things in M2 that actually belong in college-level or other courses - getting the scope wrong is a waste of time.

1. What is M2: Official test paper structure

DSE Mathematics Extended Modules Unit 2 (M2: Algebra and Calculus) is for Hope to pursue a career related to mathematics and learn more advanced mathematics knowledge in senior secondary Designed for students. Its characteristics are opposite to M1: M1 emphasizes application, M2 emphasizes Rigor and Reasoning.

Full name of subject Mathematics Extended Modules Unit 2: Algebra and Calculus
Exam format One paper, 2 hours 30 minutes
Full marks 100 points
Part A 50 points, 8 to 12 simple short questions
Part B 50 points, 3 to 5 long questions
answer requirements All questions must be answered
structure Three areas plus one further unit of study
Elective restrictions Only one of M1 and M2 can be selected

Part B only has 3 to 5 questions but counts for 50 points— This is the most important structural feature of M2. Each question is converted into about 10 to 17 points, which means that each question is a long question with multiple sub-questions, and the sub-questions often lead to each other: the result of the previous sub-question is the premise of the next sub-question. Therefore, once you make a mistake or get stuck in the first part, you will lose points for the entire question later. This is the same structure as Part B (3 to 5 long questions) of M1, but the derivation chain in M2 is usually longer.

2. Official course scope: three areas plus advanced learning units

The Education Bureau’s curriculum explanation divides M2 into three areas (Basic knowledge, algebra, calculus) and one advanced learning unit. The area of calculus includes six learning units related to limits, derivatives, integrals and their applications.

M2 course structure
fieldLearning content
Basic knowledge areas Mathematical induction; binomial theorem; continued trigonometric functions; introduction to the number e; properties of functions (including odd and even functions)
calculus area (six units of study) Limit; derivation method; application of derivation method; indefinite integral method and its application; definite integral method; application of definite integral
algebra field Determinants; matrices; linear equations; introduction to vectors; scalar products and vector products; applications of vectors
Advanced Learning Unit Comprehensive use of knowledge and skills in the three fields to solve cross-topic problems and explore

3. The most important analysis: M2 has nothing

The content names of M2 are highly overlapped with first-year college calculus and linear algebra, so the most common mistake among informal note-takers is to write college content into M2. The following five items Not part of M2:

Content that is often mistakenly included in the M2 review scope
Often mistaken for M2actual ownershipillustrate
plural Old System Additional Mathematics/Pure Mathematics The algebraic fields of M2 are determinants, matrices, linear equations and vectors, and does not include complex numbers
Lópida's Law College Level Calculus Limit calculations of M2 rely on direct substitution, factorization, rationalization, and standard limits associated with the number e
arc length calculation College Level Calculus The course explanation lists only two applications of definite integrals: the area of a plane figure, and the volume of a body of revolution.
Matrix diagonalization, eigenvalues and eigenvectors College Linear Algebra The matrix contents of M2 are operations, inverse matrices and applications in linear equations
inverse trigonometric function (arcsin, arccos, arctan) Non-M2 units of study The focus of continued trigonometric functions is the identity of complex angles, multiple angles, and sum-difference products.

In turn, there are two items of M2 that are often downplayed by anecdotes:Properties of odd and even functions (It can greatly simplify calculations in definite integral calculations and is the bonus point in Part A), and The volume formed by rotating about a straight line parallel to the coordinate axis- The course explanation clearly covers this situation, but many students have only practiced rotation about the x-axis or the y-axis.

4. Basic knowledge areas

mathematical induction

content

There are two standard steps: the basic step (verify that the proposition holds for initial values) and the inductive step (assume that it holds for n = k and prove that it also holds for n = k + 1). Used to prove equations, inequalities and divisibility properties.

Why this is M2’s signature topic

It does not test calculations, but completeness of argument. Students often "know what to do," but the proofs they write are missing key elements. Marks will be awarded according to the steps in the evaluation. If a link is missing, points will be deducted.

Four things that must be written down
  1. Clearly define the proposition (e.g. "Let P(n) be...").
  2. Verify the basic steps and write the conclusion "Therefore P(1) is established."
  3. Clearly write down the inductive hypothesis "Assume P(k) holds, that is..." - Many students skip this sentence and start derivation directly.
  4. in derivation Clearly indicate where inductive assumptions are used, and end with "Therefore P(k+1) is established", and finally write a concluding sentence.
Lost points

The inductive hypothesis is vaguely written; the derivation from k to k + 1 is skipped; the direction is wrong when proving the inequality; and the summary is missing at the end.

binomial theorem

content

Binomial expansion of positive integer exponents, calculation of binomial coefficients and combinatorial numbers, formulas for general terms, finding specific terms or coefficients of specific terms, and properties of binomial coefficients.

Differences from M1

M1 also has binomial expansions, but M2 is more often required to be used in conjunction with other topics - such as proving the properties of coefficients in conjunction with mathematical induction, or appearing in expansions in calculus problems.

Lost points

Error in calculation of number of combinations; items with coefficients (e.g. (2x − 3y)ⁿ) Forgot to handle the coefficients and negative signs; when calculating a certain coefficient after multiplying the two equations, the exponent combination is missed.

Continued trigonometric functions

content

Complex angle formulas (sum angles and difference angles), multiple angle formulas, sum-difference products and products-sum-difference, as well as related trigonometric equations and identity proofs.

Why it matters

It is a prerequisite for the field of calculus: the derivation and integration of M2 involve trigonometric functions (unlike M1, which does not involve trigonometric derivation). If you are not proficient in trigonometric identities, your integral problems will get stuck on simplification rather than the integral itself.

Lost points

The symbols of formulas are misremembered (especially the sum angle formula of cos); when proving the identity, the left and right sides are operated simultaneously instead of unilateral derivation; the double angle formula is not used to reduce the degree before integration.

Introduction to the number e and functional properties

content

The definition and properties of the number e, natural logarithms, and basic properties of functions (including Odd and even functions).

Practical value

The properties of odd and even functions are straightforward simplification tools in definite integrals: the definite integral of odd functions on a symmetric interval is zero, and the definite integral of even functions is equal to twice the half-interval. This item is almost a scoring question for Part A, but many students have never practiced it at all.

5. Calculus Area (Six Learning Units)

Learning Unit 1: Limits

content

Understand the intuitive concept of function limits and find the limits of functions.

Methods that actually need to be mastered
  • Direct substitution (continuous function).
  • Factoring eliminates common factors (handling the situation where the numerator and denominator both approach zero).
  • Rationalization (dealing with limits of radical expressions).
  • Standard limit results related to the number e, and standard limits of trigonometric functions.
Notice

M2 requires mastering the above skills,No need for L'Obitat's Law. If your notes talk about Lupida in the extreme chapter, that's college content.

Learning Unit 2: Derivative Method

content

It is based on basic principles of derivation, four operation rules (sum, product, quotient, chain expression), implicit function derivation, parametric derivation, and logarithmic derivation. Differentiable functions include algebraic, exponential, logarithmic, and Trigonometric functions.

focus
  • The chain rule is one of the most frequently used, and the function of M2 is often multi-layered.
  • Implicit function derivation: After derivation of terms containing y, we must multiply dy/dx, this is the most commonly missed step.
  • The logarithmic derivation method is used to deal with complex multiplication and division expressions or situations where the exponents are variables.
Lost points

The derivative of the inner function is leaky multiplied by the composite function; the order of the molecules of the quotient rule is written inversely; the derivative of the implicit function is leaked by the multiplication dy/dx.

Learning Unit 3: Application of Derivative Method

content

Tangent and normal equations, maximum and minimum values, second-order derivatives and concavity and convexity of curves, inflection points, asymptotes and curve description, rate of change problems and optimization.

Frequently asked questions
  • Curve drawing: It requires systematic analysis of the domain, intercept, extreme value, concavity and asymptote. It is a typical topic for Minister B.
  • Optimization application problem: After establishing the function, find the extreme value and verify whether it is the maximum or minimum.
  • Rate of change question: Use the chain rule to connect two quantities that change over time.
Lost points

The critical point is found but the extreme value properties are not verified; the curve drawing misses the asymptote; the optimization problem forgets to check the endpoint of the definition domain.

Learning unit 4: Indefinite integral method and its applications

content

Indefinite integral is the inverse operation of derivation method, basic integral formula, substitution integral method and Integration by parts, and the application of indefinite integrals (such as inversely finding the original function from the derivative).

Key differences from M1

Points Tips for M1 Only substitution integration method;M2 additionally includes Integration by parts. This is the most obvious distinction between the two subjects in the integral part.

focus
  • The key to integrating by parts is choosing the right part as the function to be differentiated - choosing wrong will make the integration more complicated.
  • Before integrating trigonometric functions, it is usually necessary to simplify or reduce them by using identities.
  • The integration constant C must be written.

Learning Unit 5: Definite Integral Method

content

The concept of definite integrals and properties of definite integrals (including the use of parity function Simplify calculations), and find definite integrals of algebraic functions, etc.

focus
  • When changing yuan The upper and lower limits of points must be converted at the same time— This is where definite and indefinite integrals are most often confused.
  • The properties of odd and even functions on symmetric intervals can directly reduce complex integrals to zero or twice the half interval.

Learning unit 6: Application of definite integrals

content

The course description lists two applications:area of plane figure, and seek The volume of a solid formed by rotating about a coordinate axis or a line parallel to a coordinate axis.

focus
  • Sketch first: For area questions, you must first determine the intersection point of the curve and the upper and lower positions; for volume questions, you must first determine the rotation axis and the rotated area.
  • Rotations about the x-axis have different integral variables than rotations about the y-axis, and the function needs to be rewritten accordingly.
  • Rotate around a straight line parallel to the coordinate axis This is the most easily overlooked situation - the radius needs to be changed to the distance from the straight line, rather than directly using the function value.
Lost points

The upper and lower limits are swapped; the intersection of the curves is not processed and the integration is done once; the radius is written incorrectly when the rotation axis is not the coordinate axis; and π in the volume formula is forgotten.

6. Algebra field

Determinant

content

The calculation and properties of second-order and third-order determinants, as well as their application in judging matrix reversibility and solving linear equations.

application
  • Determine whether the square matrix is invertible (there is an inverse matrix only if the determinant is not zero).
  • Determine whether a system of linear equations has a unique solution.
  • Solve systems of equations using Clem's rule.
Lost points

There is an error in symbol alternation when expanding the third-order determinant; there is an error in operation when using the properties of the determinant to simplify.

matrix

content

The definition and operations of matrices (addition, subtraction, scalar multiplication, matrix multiplication, transpose), identity matrix, inverse matrix, and powers of matrices.

focus
  • Matrix multiplication does not satisfy the commutative law: Generally speaking, AB is not equal to BA. This is the most basic and most often ignored property.
  • The inverse matrix only exists if the determinant is non-zero.
  • When finding higher-order matrices, the common method is to find out the recursion rule or use mathematical induction to prove the general formula - this is a common cross-topic question type in M2 (matrix plus mathematical induction).
Lost points

The order of multiplication is reversed; the arithmetic laws of transpose and inverse matrices are wrong (for example, the inverse of (AB) is equal to the inverse of B multiplied by the inverse of A, and the order is reversed).

System of linear equations

content

Use the matrix method to represent a system of linear equations and determine the existence and uniqueness of the solution. The main solution method is Clem's Law and inverse matrix method, elimination processing will also be used.

focus
  • First use the determinant to determine whether there is a unique solution, and then decide which method to use to solve it.
  • Further discussion is needed when the determinant is zero: no solution or infinite solutions. This type of "discussion questions" is a common form in Part B, and it is the easiest place to lose points.
  • Systems of equations containing parameters should be classified and discussed according to parameter values.

Introduction to vectors, scalar product and vector product

content

Representation and operations of vectors, vector modules, unit vectors, two-dimensional and three-dimensional vectors, scalar product (Used to find the included angle and determine perpendicularity) and vector product (Used to find the area and determine the direction relationship).

focus
  • A scalar product of zero means that the two vectors are perpendicular—this is the most commonly used judgment tool.
  • The modulus of a vector product is equal to the area of a parallelogram with two vectors as adjacent sides, so the area of a triangle is half that.
  • The vector product does not satisfy the commutative law (changing the order will change the sign).
Lost points

The scalar product and the vector product are confused (one result is a number and the other is a vector); the direction and order of the vector product are handled incorrectly; when finding the angle, you forget to divide by the modulus of the two vectors.

Applications of vectors

content

Use vector methods to deal with geometric problems, including three-point collinearity and bisection points, proof of properties of triangles and quadrilaterals, distances and angles in space, and vector representation of straight lines.

Why this is one of the hardest parts of the M2

There is no fixed formula for vector geometry proof questions: the key is settings— Which two vectors to choose as the base and which point to set as the origin. If the setting is good, the proof only needs three lines; if the setting is bad, it may not be done at all. This is a typical scenario of "knowing the direction but not being able to write it".

Recommended practices
  1. Start by marking all known conditions on the diagram.
  2. Select the basis vectors and explicitly write "let a =..., b =...".
  3. Represent all involved vectors as bases.
  4. Do the maths again - don't deduce as you go.

7. Common scoring patterns of M2

M2 six types of points loss and processing methods
Loss typeTypical performanceTreatment method
prove that the argument is incomplete Mathematical induction method omits the induction hypothesis or summary; the identity proves that the left and right operations operate simultaneously Establish a fixed writing template and check the four necessary links one by one
Missing chain rule or dy/dx Composite function and implicit function derivation errors Be alert if you see a variable in parentheses that is not a single variable, or if you see a term containing y
The upper and lower limits are not converted after the dollar exchange. The answer to definite integral is wrong but the process seems correct When changing yuan, immediately write the new upper and lower limits next to it
Matrix multiplication in wrong order The result of the whole question is wrong because of the misuse of commutative law. Before each multiplication, confirm whether to multiply left or right
Vector question setting is ambiguous It was discovered during the derivation that it could not continue Separate settings from derivation: write down all settings first, then start calculations
An error in the first part of Part B results in a loss of points for the entire question Because the questions guide each other, if the first question is wrong, the subsequent questions will be wrong. Check the calculation immediately after completing the first question in Part B and confirm before continuing.

Classify lost points as conceptual errors, procedural errors, review errors or calculation errors. For details, see Common points lost and errors counted.

8. Exam-taking skills and time allocation

time conversion

M2 is 100 minutes and 150 minutes, that is Each 1 minute takes approximately 1.5 minutes. Part A and Part B are each worth 50 points, but the number of questions is very different: Part A has 8 to 12 questions, and Part B has only 3 to 5 questions. Therefore time should not be allocated equally by score.

M2 time allocation suggestions
partFractionNumber of questionsRecommended timereason
Part A50 pointsQuestions 8 to 12about 58 minutesQuestions are short and independent and should be done faster than average to accumulate time
Part B50 pointsQuestions 3 to 5approx. 84 minutesEach question is about 10 to 17 points. The questions guide each other and require continuous thinking time.
examineabout 8 minutesPrioritize checking the first sub-question of each question in Part A and Part B

Answering standards (M2 is especially important)

  • The citation theorem should be stated clearly: When using a certain formula or theorem, write it out first and then substitute it.
  • Proof questions without skipping steps: M2 points are concentrated in the derivation process, and skipping steps equals voluntary deductions.
  • Never leave anything blank: Even if you are unable to complete the entire question, you will have a chance to gain partial points by writing down the setting, listing the known conditions, or completing the first step of derivation.
  • The conclusion is clear: There should be a clear conclusion sentence at the end of the proof question.

The role of computers

M2 scores mainly come from derivation, and the role of the computer is to check calculations rather than solve problems. When used, it must be a model approved by the HKEAA and printed with the APPROVED label. Pre-saved programmes must not store any text data. For details, see Computer strategy.

9. Review plan

Form 4: Basic knowledge areas

M2 FAQ

What is the structure of the M2 test paper?

One paper, 2 hours and 30 minutes, 100 points. Part A is worth 50 points and contains 8 to 12 simple short questions; Part B is worth 50 points and contains 3 to 5 long questions, all of which must be answered.

Does M2 have a plural form?

No. Complex numbers are additional mathematics or pure mathematics content under the old system. The algebraic areas of M2 are determinants, matrices, systems of linear equations, and vectors.

M2 Is there a L'Obitat law?

No, that's college-level calculus. The limits of M2 rely on direct substitution, factorization, rationalization, and standard limit results.

Do applications of definite integrals of M2 include arc lengths?

Not included. The course explanation lists only two items: the area of a plane figure, and the volume of a solid formed by rotating about a coordinate axis or a line parallel to a coordinate axis.

What is the difference in integral between M2 and M1?

The only integration technique of M1 is the substitution integration method; M2 additionally includes the integration by parts method. In addition, M2 involves the derivation and integration of trigonometric functions, while M1 does not. See details M1 complete guide.

M2 What is the subject where you are most likely to lose points?

According to our teaching observation, the most points lost are concentrated in three areas: the completeness of the argument of mathematical induction, the setting of the vector geometry proof, and the loss of points for the question B due to the error in the first question.

Is M2 harder or M1 harder?

Depends on the mindset. The difficulty of M2 lies in the rigor of argumentation and algebraic operations; the difficulty of M1 lies in situational judgment and distribution selection. The exam formats for the two subjects are exactly the same.M1 M2 comparison.

Will taking M2 help with further studies?

Different universities and departments handle Extended Modules differently and will be adjusted annually. Before choosing a subject, you should directly check the admission requirements published by the target department for that year. What is certain is that M2 is closely connected with first-year calculus and linear algebra.

When will we start preparing the M2?

It is recommended to start with Form 4. The writing standards of mathematical induction and proficiency in trigonometric identities take time to accumulate, and they are the basis for subsequent calculus and proof problems.

How much does M2 tuition cost?

Core plus M2 is 2 hours per class, 4 classes per month, and the monthly fee is HK$1,600 (average HK$200 per hour). See details Charge page.
